Working towards Complete Streets

Did you know that Jefferson Parish is currently updating the parish’s Comprehensive Plan titled Envision 2040? A comprehensive plan is a document that guides policy decisions regarding physical growth and development. Bike Easy and the Jefferson Parish Complete Streets Coalition have advocated for the comprehensive plan update steering committee to consider a Complete Streets policy as an important and necessary recommendation coming out of this process.

From our outreach and conversations over the past year, we’ve learned that creating community and family in a place with a high quality of life and strong economic development is important for Jefferson Parish residents. And a Complete Streets Policy would ensure just that. By institutionalizing the main goals of complete streets – accessibility and safety for all users of the road – people have easier access to where they play, learn, work, and shop. Complete Streets infrastructure like protected bike lanes, high visibility crosswalks, and improved transit shelters can help boost local business sales and property values as well.

Jefferson Parish will be hosting two public meetings next week on Monday, April 8 at the Eastbank Regional Library from 6-7:30PM and Tuesday, April 9 at the Westbank Regional Library from 6-7:30PM, where they will present draft recommendations for the Comprehensive Plan Update.

They need to hear your voice in support of a Complete Streets policy and the importance of including it as a recommendation of the Comprehensive Plan update process.

Will you plan on attending one of these meetings to show your support of a Complete Streets policy for Jefferson Parish?
