Do you rely on driving to get where you need to go? Imagine navigating your community without being able to drive. How would you get to work, the grocery store, or a doctor’s appointment?

For millions of people across the country, this isn’t just a thought experiment—it’s their everyday reality. Missing sidewalks, unreliable transit, and car-centered infrastructure create barriers that limit independence, access to opportunities, and overall quality of life.

That’s why communities nationwide are taking part in the Week Without Driving (September 29 – October 5)—and we’d love for New Orleanians to join in!

As an organization dedicated to making biking and walking easy, safe, and fun for everyone, Bike Easy sees the Week Without Driving as a powerful opportunity to highlight transportation challenges and collaborate on solutions. We’re also inviting elected officials and candidates to take on this challenge, helping decision-makers experience firsthand what so many of our neighbors face daily.

Why This Campaign Matters

📊 Non-driving transportation is essential in New Orleans.

  • Transit is a lifeline: 67% of local riders are Black, 43% earn under $25k/year, 53% do not have access to a car, and 53% of trips are work-related (RIDE New Orleans, 2019).

  • Residents support safe biking infrastructure: 80% support a connected network of bike lanes and trails, 73% support protected bike lanes even if it reduces a driving lane, and 87% support dedicated bike lanes for hospitality workers.

  • Equity matters: 87% of residents believe the City should provide safe alternatives to driving.

The Week Without Driving gives both community members and leaders a chance to experience life without a car, raising awareness and inspiring action toward a more equitable and accessible city.

How You Can Participate

🚶‍♀️ Plan Your Trips: Replace some or all of your drives with walking, biking, or transit. Notice what’s challenging. Ask: If I couldn’t drive, how would I make this trip?

👥 Rally Your Crew: Invite your family, friends, coworkers—and even elected officials—to join you. If they hesitate, ask what’s holding them back. Their answers may reveal transportation gaps many already face.
