We’re in the middle of our end of the year membership drive, but we’d like to make a direct ask to our membership, to help raise funds for a popular program in need of support.

This week, from December 8 – 14, the Board of Directors is matching every dollar donated to the Bike Light Giveaways program this week up to $1,000!

Riding without lights not only makes people on bikes difficult to see in dark conditions, in most states, including Louisiana, it’s also a ticket-able offense. According to Bike Law Louisiana, “at night, a bicycle must be equipped with a front white light and a rear red light, both visible from 500 feet away”.

Bike light giveaways hosted by Bike Easy provide an immediate, visible and direct way to improve conditions for people biking in New Orleans. For these giveaways, our staff and volunteers set up on a street during the dark evening hours, either in a high-traffic commuting area or in conjunction with an evening event, and hand out bike lights to those who ride by without any – no questions asked.

In addition to helping people biking ride safer, these giveaways offer an opportunity to have a conversation, share Bike Easy resources and information, and strengthen bonds within the community.

In 2024, Bike Easy hosted 5 bike light giveaways, distributing 130 bike light sets in total. That’s 130 people who immediately become visible in the dark, while riding their bike.

Especially during this time of year, where it gets dark before many of our evening commutes, this program is in high demand. Help us raise crucial funds to purchase bike lights in bulk, and provide this service to our community!

If you would like to be more comfortable riding at night, check out our FREE Biking After Dark Workshop happening on Monday, December 16th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Nora Navra Library (1902 St Bernard Ave0.  For more details and to RSVP, click here

Thank you for your generosity, and for supporting Bike Easy!

In service,

Bike Easy Board of Directors
