The first of its kind in Jefferson Parish.
After jumpstarting a protected bike lane pop-up in New Orleans, Bike Easy has its eyes set of Jefferson Parish. On Saturday, March 24, Bike Easy and the City of Kenner will install a pop-up protected bikeway on Loyola Drive between Yenni Drive to East Loyola Drive from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This temporary protected setup will separate the Loyola Drive pop-up lane from motor vehicle traffic by various barriers: painted lines, traffic cones, and other barricades. Bike Easy will maintain this temporary setup for three weeks, and will convert the street back to its original setup in mid-April.
“This pop-up bikeway will demonstrate the utility of safe and reliable biking infrastructure and how existing roads in Jefferson Parish can be built to share for all the people who bike, walk, take transit, and drive,” Bike Easy wrote in its official release. “With this project, we hope to pave the way for children and families to more easily bike or walk to local parks, schools, shopping centers as well as giving everyone easier access to the levee trail by way of West Esplanade.”
In summer of 2017, Bike Easy held its first temporary pop-up on St. Bernard Avenue between Claiborne and North Rampart Street. Bike Easy separated that protected bike lane from motor vehicle traffic with a temporary parking lane.
Last year Bike Easy said it would hold three pop-up bike lane trials in the New Orleans metro area is 2018.
