This February, Bike Easy is gearing up to offer its next round of Smart Biking classes at the Caffin Ave. SDA Church, Community Service Building, 1019 Caffin Ave. New Orleans, LA 70117.
This free course is designed to help anyone feel comfortable and safe riding a bike in traffic!
Upon completion of all three sessions, a Smart Biking certificate will be awarded, and participants will be eligible to join our team of paid bike safety education volunteers. Successful participants are also eligible to go on to take the LCI seminar to work for Bike Easy as a League Certified Instructor. This course is free but registration is required.
The class, formerly titled “Traffic Safety 101”, is structured in three sessions:
Session 1
Wednesday, February 20, 5:30-7:30pm
Getting to Know Your Bike and Your Rights (in-class/off-bike)
Topics: Choosing a bike, adjusting the bike, maintenance, clothing/gear, rules of the road.
Session 2
Thursday, February 21, 5:30-7:30pm
Smart Bike Handling (in-class & on-bike)
Topics: Handling basics, shifting gears, where to ride, infrastructure, crashes and hazards, night riding, rural riding.
Session 3
Sunday, February 24, 10am-3pm
Smart Road Riding (outside/on-bike)
Topics: Drive train maintenance, riding with a group, sharing paths and trails, inclement weather, night riding, rural riding, flat fixing.
