Speak Up for Complete Streets

Let Mayor LaToya Cantrell know you support better biking and walking in New Orleans!

This morning Bike Easy and the New Orleans Complete Streets Coalition were invited to the New Orleans City Council to make a presentation in support of a data-driven and equity-focused Complete Streets Policy for New Orleans. Dan Favre and Rob Henig Bell from Bike Easy, Dr. Jeanette Gustat from Tulane Public Research Center, and Coretta LaGarde from American Heart Association spoke about the safety, health, and community benefits a strong and equitable Complete Streets policy can bring to our city.

Then, City Councilmembers unanimously passed a resolution supporting Mayor Cantrell’s efforts to implement Complete Streets policy! Mayor Cantrell has laid out plans for a policy update in her Forward Together Transition Report, and we’re excited the City Council is fully on board.

This is a great step, but it’s not yet a full victory for the people who bike, walk, and ride transit in New Orleans. Now, we need to make sure Mayor Cantrell hears from us and knows why we support her administration’s efforts to make biking & walking safe and accessible for every resident of New Orleans.

Complete Streets are streets that are built to share. Children safely crossing a busy street using high-visibility crosswalks, easy and comfortable access to transit stops for people of every age and ability, added space and physical protection for people biking… these are just some of what a well-implemented Complete Streets policy can provide.

With unprecedented infrastructure investment underway, the time is now to update our city’s Complete Streets policy so it brings streets built to share to every community. The New Orleans Complete Streets Coalition has shown how much community support exists and that it continues to grow. Mayor Cantrell ran on, and included in her transition report, plans to improve accessibility to safe biking & walking. Today, the City Council came together to express their unanimous support.

Let’s build on this momentum! Speak up for safe and accessible transportation options for New Orleans residents by calling Mayor Cantrell to support her work in creating Complete Streets for New Orleans!
