GNO Bike to Work Day 2018 - RECAP

Celebrating all people - first timers and regular riders - who ride a bike to work!

Bike to Work Day marks our annual region-wide event to encourage new riders to bicycle commuting, support seasoned commuters and celebrate riding your bike to work. Marking 7 years of partnering with Entergy to present this highly anticipated event, Bike to Work Day builds community among bicycle commuters and Bike Easy members, raises awareness around the city for people who bike for transportation, and also makes a strong statement of support for continued social and physical investment in better bicycle facilities in our city.

This year we shifted the morning meet up to Duncan Plaza and couldn’t have asked for better weather. We were joined by Headline Sponsor – Entergy; Platinum Sponsor – Blue Bikes; Gold Sponsor – Bike Law & Whole Foods Market along with community partners like American Heart Association, Friends of Lafitte Greenway, Odyssey House of Louisiana, RIDE New Orleans and over a hundred enthusiastic riders! We had yummy snacks generously provided by Whole Foods Market and Pagoda Café as well as iced coffee pedaled from uptown by the crew from Hey! Café.

We asked folks who came to the Plaza to write postcards about why safe streets are important to them and luckily some aspiring authors were in the crowd! Hunter K shared that, “Biking saves me money, time, and makes me healthy on the way to work – I just want to be safe.” Brittany F wrote, “I walk to work and need to be safe.” Nicole R put it simply by saying, “More people should be able to get around town easier.” These are just a few of the highlights since we collected about 100 postcards at the morning meet up. Everyone who signed a postcard received a commemorative button this year!

Over 50 people signed in at the bike trains that met across Orleans and Jefferson Parish to ride to Duncan Plaza. More than 300 people logged rides to work on the Bike Easy Challenge site. All who rode their bike to work and logged their ride also earned an “I Bike to Work” specialty badge. If you did ride to work on Wednesday, April 11 but haven’t logged your ride yet, have no fear you can back log your ride and still earn that badge.

Bike Easy is honored to celebrate all people who ride a bike to get to work in our region. Our aim is to help everyone feel like making that choice can be easy, safe and fun. Hope to see you out there next year!
