Bike Easy seeks to expand educational capacity by training more instructors

As part of our efforts to facilitate community education forums, Bike Easy holds Bicycle Safety Workshops in schools, neighborhood centers, and businesses throughout the region. This spring Bike Easy is offering bike safety training courses for teachers, riding enthusiasts, and those interested in potentially becoming a Bike Easy Instructor at our forums and events. We are seeking those who are passionate and knowledgeable about bicycling or those willing to learn!

To become a paid Bike Easy Instructor at these events, individuals must first become certified as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI). The national certification is obtained by completing the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) cycling curriculum. The curriculum includes a 9-hour training called Traffic Skills 101 & a three-day LCI Seminar. Certified instructors are required to keep their membership and certifications current with the LAB by maintaining minimum teaching requirements (i.e. using your certification to teach bike safety!). Bike Easy Instructors also attend one professional development session with Bike Easy each year and receive extra training and support to best apply their bicycle education skills to our work in the Greater New Orleans area.

We’ve scheduled two sections of the Traffic Skills 101 classes and will be held at the Bike Easy offices in March and April. Traffic Skills 101 (TS-101) will help you ride safely and effectively — to work, to the store, around your neighborhood or around the state. The course covers a lot of information, including bike selection, simple maintenance, fixing a flat, and strategies for riding a bike safely and confidently. Traffic Skills 101 is taught in two sessions: four hours in-class and five hours on bike including parking lot drills and a ride on city streets.

Section 1 is will be on Friday, March 18 & Saturday, March 19 – THIS SECTION IS CLOSED; Section 2 will be on Saturday, April 16 & Sunday, April 17 – OPENINGS STILL AVAILABLE. Please register for the April Section of TS-101 HERE. Completion of both sections of the TS-101 is mandatory to be eligible for the LCI Seminar.

The LCI Certification Seminar will be hosted at the Bike Easy office at 2100 OC Haley Blvd May 13 – 15. The program is an in-depth instructor training in bicycle safety which includes group riding practice, traffic safety training, as well as educational materials for future instruction. These trainings are typically offered at cost to individuals but Bike Easy is able to offer this opportunity to the public with generous support and funding from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
