The Alliance for Biking and Walking releases Benchmarking Report with great news for NOLA!

The Alliance for Biking & Walking, the North American coalition of state and local bicycling and walking advocacy organizations, just released their 2014 Benchmarking Report to look at nationwide biking and walking statistics.

Here at Bike Easy, we are excited to announce (drum roll please)… that New Orleans has jumped up in the rankings from 10th to 8th in the nation in terms of the highest mode share of bicycling to work, at 2.3%! (Mode share basically measures our percentage overall of bicycle commuters compared to driving, walking, and public transit.)

And that’s not the only way that we stack up compared to other major metro areas. The city ranks 7th in per capita spending on bicycle and pedestrian projects, right behind Portland, Oregon. Upcoming infrastructure projects – like the Lafitte Greenway, coming on line in 2015 – should help improve this ranking further.

The popularity of cycling to work here in New Orleans was highlighted on April 9th at our 3rd Annual NOLA Bike to Work Day, Presented by Entergy. With over 800 cyclists taking part (and perfect weather!), we formed an impressive crowd at the meet-up point in Lafayette Square. This was the best-attended Bike to Work Day yet, and if the benchmarking report is any indication, we’ll see the event continue to grow in the future!

The Benchmarking Project draws on data collected from the 50 largest American cities in 2011 and 2012, and is intended to provide a resource for advocates who work towards greater accessibility and safety of bicycling and walking.

However, the report also calls attention to the continued need for investment in bicycling and walking and advocacy with a striking statistic: 11.4% of all trips nationally are taken by bicycle or on foot, and 14.9% of roadway fatalities are pedestrians and bicyclists. Meanwhile, only 2.1% of federal transportation funding goes to bicycling – indicating that there is absolutely more work to be done to make our streets safe and comfortable for all.

Today, however, we can celebrate our new ranking – 8th in the nation is an impressive feat! Thanks for all that you do, on NOLA Bike to Work Day and every day, to see those numbers grow year after year.
