Esplanade Needs Bicycle Lanes

COMPLETE ESPLANADEBIKE LANES FROM CLAIBORNE TO MOSS

SUPPORT FOR CITY’S PLAN TO INSTALL A COMPLETE STREET ON ESPLANADE AVE:

We support the city’s intent to reduce Esplanade Ave to one travel lane and install a bike lane from Claiborne Ave to Moss St in both ways of traffic. This will greatly increase the safety for the many bicyclists, pedestrians, and students who form a large portion of the traffic along the thoroughfare.

COMPLETE STREETS IN EFFECT

We appreciate the city’s swift implementation of the Complete Streets Ordinance. This law, effective at the end of 2012, requires nearly all road construction projects accommodate all users, including motorized vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other nonmotorized users. We see our streets as more than just a way to move cars from point A to point B and welcome the new crosswalks, signage, and dedicated lanes that are part of a complete street.

ACTION REQUESTED FROM THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

  • Include the dedicated striped bicycle lane as part of the contract to resurface Esplanade Ave as part of the Paths to Progress Program.
  • If the lane painting cannot be included in the repaving project, commit resources to immediately stripe the bicycle lanes after repaving.
  • Continue Complete Streets implementation in future Paths to Progress projects, specifically the repaving of St. Claude from Rampart to Elysian Fields.
  • Include pedestrian-scale llighting and signage improvements to streets recently overhauled as part of Paths to Progress.
