Walk & Roll to School Week

Our annual Bike and Walk encouragement event for kids, families, and schools!

Walk & Roll to School Week

In May 2015, Bike Easy worked in partnership with Tulane University’s Prevention Research Center to hold a city-wide, family friendly Walk and Roll to School Week! These programs were the culmination of in-classroom Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety training completed by 4th and 5th graders at several partner schools, through our Safe Routes to School Programs.

Working with local schools, community organizations, parents, and students, we promoted biking and walking through a series of events throughout the week. Some schools hosted Walking School Buses, were a group of students and families met up at a nearby park and walked together to schools; others opted for after-school Family Bike Rides. The Walk and Roll Family Kickoff Festival at Keller Library was open to students district-wide, and included a 5K bike ride around the neighborhood.

Our partner schools for the inaugural Walk & Roll to School week include:

ARISE Academy
Andrew H. Wilson Charter School
Lawrence D Crocker College Prep
Medard H. Nelson Charter
ReNEW Schaumburg
ReNEW Cultural Arts
Success Prep Academy
Sylvanie Williams College Prep
Phillis Wheatley Elementary School

The week of events were made possible by a Safe Routes to Schools grant through the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, funded to the Prevention Research Center at Tulane University in partnership with Bike Easy.

All schools throughout the region are encouraged to participate during Walk & Roll to School Week in 2016 – if you want more information about how your school can participate, contact virginia (at) bikeeasy.org
