If you’re fascinated by New Orleans’ rich and colorful past and are enthusiastic about sharing it with others, consider signing up for a course through the Friends of the Cabildo to become a licensed New Orleans tour guide. Applications are being accepted now.

The course, which will run from Feb. 23 through March 26, includes more than 100 hours of lecture, fieldwork and practical instruction from lecturers who are authorities in their fields. The speakers volunteer their time; the $250 fee is for materials and facilities.

People who complete the course are required to commit to lead two French Quarter tours per month for a minimum of two years as a volunteer guide for the FOC. These tours, conducted by volunteer guides, support the organization raises money to support the Louisiana State Museum.

Jewelry show opens to public
For the first time, the general public will have access to the New Orleans Gift and Jewelry Show at the Morial New Orleans Convention Center. Public hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 28 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 29.

The quarterly trade show, which is expected to attract more than 40,000 buyers and vendors, will be open only to documented business owners Jan. 26-27. Previously, the whole show was only for business owners.

Tickets to the show can be purchased at the Market Access registration desk in Hall J of the Convention Center; discount coupons are available at helenbrettexhibits.com.

Bike Easy
Applications are being accepted through Feb. 2 to become Bike Easy Complete Street Ambassadors who will promote walking, biking and public transit in Orleans and Jefferson parishes. For information about the program and application forms visit http://www.bikeeasy.org.
