Bike Easy, along with ambassadors and volunteers, is installing a “pop-up protected bike lane” on Loyola Drive in Kenner. The route will run along Loyola Drive through University Village. The bike way will be placed along the sidewalk and protected by putting up barricades to physically separate bikers from car traffic.

This pop-up will show the importance of being able to connect to businesses, residential areas, schools, and parks from the levee trail(s). Particularly with this route, being able to bike safely off the levee along a bike lane will allow folks to access Kenner City Park, various schools and churches in the area, Walmart shopping center, Ochsner Medical Center, residential neighborhoods, and much more. As of now, bikers attempting to traverse the parish North to South face streets with high speed limits and no bike lanes, dangerous intersection crossings, and drivers that lack education on how to share the road.

While this pop-up demonstration is not the quick-fix to safer and accessible biking across all of Jefferson Parish, it will show the ideal of how to engineer streets built to share for all users, and highlight an important connection for the bikers of Kenner.

Help us get the word out about this pop-up demonstration project and recruit local residents to help with outreach and the actual installation of the bikeway by canvassing the University Village neighborhood on Saturday, January 27 from 11AM-2PM.

Bring a friend to meet us at Wentwood Park for some free snacks and coffee. We’ll head out from there to canvass the neighborhood and recruit volunteers to help with this demonstration project!

Fill out this google form to let us know you want to canvass with us!
