Background
On June 10th, the Claiborne Corridor Ambassadors will host Safe-Tea on the Lafitte Greenway. Safe-Tea is an action to raise community awareness about safety of people on bikes, on foot, and in cars at the Lafitte Greenway’s major crossings led by the Claiborne Corridor Ambassadors—Leonetta Terrell, Paulette Davidson, and Tyronne Smith.

The Claiborne Corridor Ambassadors is a team of citizen advocates focused on changes and improvements to local streets. Developed out of the Foundation for Louisiana’s Equity Caucus Transportation Working Group, the 10-week training program empowers a cohort of ambassadors to identify transportation problems and lead community-driven campaigns that advocate for safe, equitable, and affordable transportation options to promote walking, biking, transit, and livable streets in their neighborhoods.

The Claiborne Corridor Ambassadors have identified the Lafitte Greenway crossing at North Broad Street as a high-need location for education and awareness, alerting drivers on either side of the Lafitte Greenway crossing to exercise caution when approaching.

City Council members have expressed support, and several will speak at the event. City Councilmember Susan Guidry, District A supports Greenway Safety: “The Lafitte Greenway is fast becoming a major transportation and recreation artery. While this is exciting, the Greenway’s unique construction necessarily leads to frequent interactions among drivers, bikers and pedestrians. The Safe-Tea on the Greenway event is a great way to raise awareness and remind everyone that safety should always be their first priority while driving, biking, and walking across streets and intersections.”

Safe-Tea on the Greenway will be held on Friday, June 10th, 3:00-5:30pm at The Broad Theater, 636 N Broad St. Community members will participate in creating and displaying their own safety signs, and a press conference will be held. Free iced tea will be served. This community-driven initiative is supported by Bike Easy and Friends of Lafitte Greenway.

The Claiborne Corridor Ambassador Program is made possible by the Foundation for Louisiana.
