As the city has bared witness to tragic events such as the crash that killed two people biking on Esplanade Avenue, it is clear that a line painted on the street isn’t always enough to keep people safe. Education, along with advocacy and infrastructure improvements, is a crucial piece of our work for streets built to share that are safe for all users, regardless of how they transport themselves from A to B.

Bike Easy offers different ways to educate the Greater New Orleans Region on how to bike, walk, and drive together safely on our streets. Here are three events coming up this week to up your bike safety game:

PEOPLE FRIENDLY DRIVING WORKSHOP

Tuesday, June 18 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

New Orleans Public Library – Nora Navra Branch

1902 St. Bernard Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana 70116

This free class educates all motorists on safe driving behaviors around people who are walking or biking.

Learn about common crashes and how to avoid them, safety tips and techniques, and discover how to navigate bicycle infrastructure on the roadways.

Students who complete the class will receive a People Friendly Driver Certificate and Bike/Walk Friendly Driver window decal.

BICYCLING FOR ALLSAFETY & SKILLS SESSION

Tuesday, June 18 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Algiers Regional Library

3014 Holiday Dr, New Orleans, Louisiana 70131

Join the New Orleans Public Library, The Brinton Family Health & Healing Center, AARP Louisiana and Bike Easy for a free bicycling safety workshop to learn about rules of the road and City of New Orleans’ Moving New Orleans: Bikes initiative.

The workshop will also include bike helmet fitting, bicycle safety check and collision avoidance, with opening remarks from City Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer.

Families are welcome and participants will receive a free collapsible water bottle and bike lights.

SMART BIKING COURSE

Saturday, June 22 10:30–4:30 PM

Sunday, June 23 1:00-4:00 PM

Bike Easy Office

Smart Biking is a free course designed to help anyone feel comfortable to safely ride a bike in traffic.

Saturday, June 22, 10:30-4:30pm

Session 1 – Getting to Know Your Bike, Your Rights and Smart Bike Handling

Topics: Choosing a bike, adjusting the bike, maintenance, clothing/gear, rules of the road, handling basics, shifting gears, where to ride, infrastructure, crashes and hazards, night riding, rural riding

Sunday, June 23, 1:00pm-4:00pm

Session 2– Smart Road Riding

Topics: drive train maintenance, riding with a group, sharing paths and trails, inclement weather, night riding, rural riding, fixing a flat tire

Upon completion of all sessions a Smart Biking Certificate will be awarded.

Smart Biking is free, but registration is required.
