Walk / Bike / Places is in New Orleans September 16th - 19th!
Dan Favre, Executive Director, checking in! Walk / Bike / Places is coming to New Orleans, September 16 – 19th! The Walk / Bike / Places conference, formerly known as Pro Walk / Pro Bike / Pro Place (phew, say that 3 times fast), will draw city planners, transportation engineers, public health professionals, elected officials, community leaders, placemakers, and professional walking and bicycling advocates from around the country and world.
I’m thrilled that Bike Easy has the privilege of being the local partner, and it’s been a privilege to serve as the chair of the Local Host Committee. Back when he was still the “new” Community Education Manager for Bike Easy, Keith Holt educated me on the benefit of bringing the energy and expertise of this gathering to New Orleans. We got excited about the possibility of making this incredible learning experience more accessible to the people of the region and the momentum it would bring to our local movement. With support from too many partners to list, we applied to host. When I got the call from Mark Plotz, the Conference Director, that New Orleans would be the 2018 host, I whooped in celebration.
Walk / Bike / Places 2018 will feature 3 days of over 80 breakout sessions, poster displays, daily general sessions and most excitingly, mobile workshops that will explore the city’s rich historic and cultural landscape. This year, there’s also something new: Super Sessions, three-hour expert panels which will offer deep dive into major topics of interest to all conversations surrounding walking, biking, and placemaking.
When Keith explains the importance of bringing Walk / Bike / Places to New Orleans, he flips the old proverb and says we’ve got to bring the mountain to Muhammad. I didn’t realize at the time just how much effort that implied. It’s been fantastic to work with everyone on the Local Host Committee and the conference organizers from Project for Public Spaces. I send my sincere thanks to all of them.
While we realize this opportunity may be out of reach for many of our supporters, Walk / Bike / Places is a great value for a conference of this nature. We’re excited to welcome people from all over the globe, and I’d especially love to see as many folks from Louisiana and the Southeast as possible. Please join us in New Orleans for Walk / Bike / Places this September!
The conference is only one of many exciting projects and activities happening to support better mobility and the health and prosperity it can bring. Keep an eye out for exciting news and announcements coming soon! I appreciate all you do to support Bike Easy and our partners in our shared efforts to improve the quality-of-life in our region.
