Bike Easy & Young Leadership Council encourage active transportation to and from school

In partnership with Young Leadership Council’s Where Ya’Rack program, Bike Easy taught bicycle safety classes in New Orleans East at Einstein Charter School’s Sarah T Reed Middle School. Supported by Safe Routes to School funding from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, YLC is installing bike racks at every school in Orleans Parish. After installation, Bike Easy leads bike safety classes with students during PE instruction time.

Six new bike racks were installed at Reed in November 2015. During the second week of December, Bike Easy taught over 200 sixth through eighth graders about basic bike maintenance, how to fit a helmet correctly, and how to safely ride bikes in traffic. Emphasizing awareness and respect for all road users, students received the League of American Bicyclist Smart Cycling Quick Guide and also became eligible for Reed’s end of semester raffle.

The staff at Sarah T Reed were extremely welcoming and enthusiastic to have bike safety education for their students. Following these classes and to encourage active transportation to school, the administration raffled two new bikes this week! Bike Easy contributed two helmets from Bell and two light sets from NiteRider so that the winners will be prepared to ride safely.

It was a pleasure to work with middle school students in New Orleans East this month. We are working hard to grow the region’s bicycle culture to include our youth riders and are excited to continue to partner with schools to provide this crucial instruction!
