New Orleans is a Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community!
The League of American Bicyclists names New Orleans a top bicycling community!
Today, the League of American Bicyclists announced that New Orleans has been promoted to a Silver-level bicycle friendly community!
The League’s Bicycle Friendly Community program provides a toolkit for local communities to learn more about how to provide infrastructure and education to make bicycling safe and comfortable for everyone. As part of this process, they assess communities annually to learn more about their accomplishments and provide recognition of local efforts and momentum.
We at Bike Easy are happy to see the huge strides for bicycling in our City recognized by a national group. With a 3.6% bicycle commuting rate, according to 2013 census data, New Orleans has the 5th highest bicycle commuting rate for the top 50 largest US Cities!
And more improvements are on the way – according to Mayor Landrieu:
“Biking is a healthy, safe, and equitable way for residents and visitors to access jobs and recreation. As bicycle ridership increases across New Orleans, we are committed to expanding our bicycle infrastructure. Before Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had fewer than 5 miles of bikeways. We’re on pace to have more than 100 miles by the end of 2014. I want to thank the League of American Bicyclists for this important designation as New Orleans continues to advance as a bicycle friendly community.”
A special thank you to the City of New Orleans and all of our regional partners for their continued dedication to making New Orleans a more bike-friendly city.
Let’s go for Gold!
